Michael L. Wright Joins Fatal Police Shooting Case
Police in Columbus, Ohio released video footage Tuesday capturing the fatal shooting of an unarmed black man while lying in his bed. Donovan Lewis, 20 years old, was killed when police executed a warrant for his arrest in the early morning hours of September 1, 2022.
In the footage obtained from officers’ bodycams, police are seen arriving at the entrance to Lewis’ home, identifying themselves and instructing those inside the home to exit. In approximately eight minutes, two people are seen exiting before officers entered with a K-9 in search of Lewis, who did not leave with the home’s other occupants.
In the footage, police are seen locating Lewis in his bed, beginning to raise his hands as police instructed while opening the door. Officer Ricky Anderson, who had drawn his weapon before the door was opened, immediately opened fired on Lewis almost simultaneously with the door opening, killing him. Police initially reported that Lewis appeared to be holding something in his hand but found no weapons on his person or in his bed following the shooting. A search warrant return confirmed no firearm was found anywhere in the residence.
Following the shooting, Anderson, a 30-year veteran of the Columbus Police Department, was placed on paid administrative leave, and the incident is under investigation.
The Lewis family is filing a civil lawsuit against Anderson and the Columbus Police Department. Attorney Michael L. Wright of Wright & Schulte LLC is joining Rex Elliot as part of the Lewis family’s legal team.
