New Impaired Driving Policies Could Save Lives

Unfortunately, Driving While Under The Influence Of Drugs Or Alcohol Is A Choice That Millions Of People Make Each Year, Often Leading To Impaired Driving With Catastrophic Results.

The statistics presented by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) are disheartening at best. They show that in for the year 2010-
• 30 people died each day in alcohol related driving accidents, equaling one death per 48 minutes
• 10,228 people died in alcohol related crashes
• 211 of those deaths were children under the age of 14
• 112 million adults reported driving while impaired yet,
• Only 1.4 million were arrested for driving under the influence

The CDC also reports that impaired drivers involved in fatal accidents were eight times more likely to having at least one previous conviction for driving while intoxicated than drivers who had not been driving impaired.
Recommended Policies to Limit Impaired Driving
In an effort to stem the number of impaired drivers on the road, and decrease alcohol and drug related highway fatalities, the CDC has complied policies that could prevent impaired driving deaths and accidents in Ohio and across the nation. These include:

  • Ignition Interlock Devices for all convicted offenders – These devices will prevent a car from starting if the driver has alcohol in their system- these devices result in a 67 percent decrease in the rate of re-arrests, and lower the number of impaired driving accidents and fatalities
  • Increased use of sobriety checkpoints – these checkpoints result in an average 20 percent decrease in impaired driving accidents and fatalities
  • Implementation of zero tolerance laws for drivers under the age of 21
  • Maintaining the minimum drinking age of 21
