On February 10, 2009, Ohio State University student was legally crossing a crosswalk across an OSU campus street when a bus owned by Ohio State University struck the young man and knocked him over. The student filed a personal injury complaint against the school, which reached a settlement on April 15, 2014. The university agreed to pay Fox the sum of $12,500 to cover the cost of lost wages and medical expenses as a result of the injury.

According to the personal injury complaint, Fox was legally crossing the crosswalk when the “walk” signal was lit up. The bus failed to yield on a left turn, according to the injury complaint, which caused Fox to suffer injuries, medical expenses, and lost wages. However, according to OSU attorneys, it was the bus that actually had the right-of-way at the time, and Fox was walking outside the crosswalk at the time of injury. According to the OSU attorneys, the bus driver could not see Fox as he crossed the street. The attorneys in this personal injury complaint also stated that Fox had no visible injuries at the time of the incident. The case was settled for $12,500 on April 15, 2014. Pedestrians are injured in vehicle crashes regularly in Ohio. In 2011, 99 pedestrians were injured or killed in Ohio auto accidents. Ohio crash data does not state how many of these accidents were caused by busses, but each year, at least a few pedestrians are injured or killed when hit by a bus. According to Ohio crash data, nearly 2,809 pedestrians and drivers were injured in bus, van, or limo crashes. School children are at particular risk for getting hit by a bus, as more children walk near school busses and drivers cannot always see children in the road. Tips for Pedestrian Safety Around Busses

Pedestrians can reduce their chances of getting injured by a bus by implementing common sense safety tips. You can reduce your risk of getting hit by a bus as a pedestrian by following the safety tips outlined below:

  • When taking the bus, arrive on time so you are not rushing to catch the bus, which may contribute to careless behavior.
  • Stand back at least 6 feet from stopped busses unless getting on and off.
  • Never walk in front of a bus without making eye contact with the driver.
  • Do not cross crosswalks when busses are turning the corner.
  • Watch for possible traffic from all sides when crossing the street.
  • Always remain inside the crosswalk lines when crossing the street.
  • Never walk behind a bus.
  • Do not stop to pick up dropped belongings around the bus. The driver may not be able to see you, which could lead to injuries. Tell the bus driver if you have dropped something.
  • Never run while crossing the street.
  • Never cross the street without a marked crosswalk or a crossing guard.

Parents should instruct children in these safety tips to prevent dangerous pedestrian injuries during school bus trips. Adults crossing the street or taking the bus can also benefit from implementing these safety tips.
