Statistics Show Warmer Weather Brings More Ohio Motorcycle Accidents In Dayton, Cincinnati And Other Ohio Cities

According to data from the Ohio Department of Public safety, motorcycles are responsible for a portion of Ohio auto accidents in Dayton, Cincinnati and other Ohio cities each year. The most recent data from 2011 and 2012 shows that Ohio motorcycle accidents are responsible for a significant number of Ohio accidents and fatalities each year. In 2011, there were 3,961 Ohio motorcycle crashes with 3,351 injuries and 166 deaths. Nearly all Ohio motorcycle accidents resulted in injury. In 2012, there were 3,824 injuries and 163 fatalities due to Ohio motorcycle crashes. Department of Public Safety data shows that the group at highest risk for fatalities from motorcycle accidents is individuals between the ages of 51 and 55. A close second is the age group between 46 and 50. For injuries, the same two groups are at higher risk, just reversed.

Data from the Ohio Department of Public Safety shows that a significant number of motorcycle accidents in Dayton, Cincinnati and other Ohio cities are not caused by the motorcycle driver, but are instead the result of other motorists. Ohio accidents involving both a motorcycle and another vehicle account for 56 percent of motorcycle fatalities. Head on collisions in Ohio are one of the biggest causes of motorcycle-related deaths. Other contributing factors include: a lack of vigilance in watching out for motorcycles on the road, wet pavement, lack of protection for the driver, objects on the road, and uneven roads.

There have been several high profile Ohio motorcycle accident incidences in 2014. Death from motorcycle accidents is common, and accidents are more likely during the warm weather months when more Ohio motorcyclists are out on the road. Since the end of May, there have been numerous Ohio motorcycle accidents, including the following 7 fatalities:

  • On May 18th, a man driving a motorcycle ran into a deer and died after the crash.
  • On May 24th, the driver of a motorcycle collided with a guardrail, which killed him and his passenger.
  • On May 26th, a man died after crashing his motorcycle and being ejected by the side of the road.
  • On June 1st, a teen driving a motorcycle collided with a vehicle on the road, killing him instantly.
  • On June 7th, 3 individuals were killed in Ohio motorcycle accidents in three separate incidents. These drivers were wearing helmets.

Motorcyclists can cut down on injuries by wearing proper safety gear including a helmet, protective pants, protective jacket, motorcycle boots, protective glasses, and gloves. In Ohio, motorcycle drivers under the age of 18 and drivers who have been licensed for less than one year are required to wear a helmet at all times. Other drivers are not legally required to wear a helmet, but it is still advised for safety reasons. By following the safety tips outlined below, watching out for other vehicles on the road, and always following posted speed limits and other driving signs, motorcyclists and drivers can co-exist on Ohio highways.
