Ohio Nursing Home Placed On Federal Watch List

  • Post category:May 2013

An Ohio nursing home is placed on the federal Special Focus Facility List after inspections find serious problems, including resident sexual abuse.

East Galbraith Health Care Center in Deer Park, Ohio has been added to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) watch list for repeated serious deficiencies which include the unreported sexual abuse of a female resident with dementia by a male resident with dementia; male staff changing a female resident’s clothes against her wishes; and improper medication dosage given to at least one resident, WCPO reports. According to the inspection report by the federal agency, 12 deficiencies were identified at the 140-bed nursing facility which is double the state average and far above the national average. East Galbraith is one of 130 nursing facilities on the list, and will be tracked by the government agency and undergo frequent inspections. Should the facility fail to improve its practices, it could lose its ability to accept patients who are on Medicaid or Medicare, Cincinnati.com reports. According to CMS branch manager, Heather Long, a nursing facility is placed on the federal watch list if they have a high number of problems over a long period of time. State inspectors nominate such facilities to the list. The East Galbraith Health Care Center has been fined by the federal government four times over the past 13 years, totally nearly $45,000 and in 2010 was unable to accept new patients, Cincinnati.com reports. The 15-page inspection report details the 12 deficiencies and the steps that were taken to correct them. It can be found on Medicare.gov website (http://www.medicare.gov/nursinghomecompare/SurveyReportDetail.aspx?

The vast majority of nursing homes rely on payments from the federal health care programs Medicare and Medicaid for their operations, BizJournals reports that once a nursing facility is added to the federal watch list it receives more inspections than normal, and must improve deficient areas within 18 to 24 months or risk losing Medicare and Medicaid resident. Abel Quintero, the administrator of the nursing home told Cincinnati.com that the facility has “made vast improvement and continue to do so.” He continued saying the nursing home is “heading in the right direction, but I can’t say that we have totally arrived.”
