NHTSA Expands Deadly Airbag Recall to 7.8 Million Vehicles Reports Wright & Schulte LLC

An airbag recall issued by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) following the death of four people and covers millions of vehicles from over 10 car manufactures has been expanded To Almost 8 Million

The NHTSA initially included just 4.1 million vehicles in the airbag recall issued October 20th, the organization has now increased the number of potentially faulty vehicles to nearly 8 million. The NHTSA has announced that this recall is extremely urgent, and has released a press release pleading with vehicle owners to “take immediate action.” According to the NHTSA, “responding to these recalls, whether old or new, is essential to personal safety and it will help aid our ongoing investigation into Takata airbags and what appears to be a problem related to extended exposure to consistently high humidity and temperatures.” [http://www.nhtsa.gov/About+NHTSA/Press+Releases/Vehicle-owners-with-defective-airbags-urged-to-take-immediate-action, October 2014]

The airbag recall was first brought to light in the death of a woman from Florida who died due to flying shards of plastic and metal after getting in an accident. Medical examiners investigating the injuries reported to Business Insider that the woman may have been able to survive the other injuries she received in the crash with a working air bag. Three additional people have also been linked to airbag related deaths, according to Business Insider. The air bags in question are all manufactured by manufacturing Takata, and according to the most recent data from the NHTSA, humid environments are triggers for the explosions, which promoted the organization to urge vehicle owners in Florida, Puerto Rico, limited areas near the Gulf of Mexico in Texas, Alabama, Mississippi, Georgia, and Louisiana, as well as Guam, Saipan, American Samoa, Virgin Islands and Hawaii to get their cars checked as soon as possible. Vehicle owners can check if their vehicle is included in the recall by visiting safercar.gov.
