EcoBoost Engine Problems Spark Investigations by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Wright & Schulte Report
National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) Is Probing 95 Consumer Complaints of Ford 3.5-Liter V6 EcoBoost Engine’s over Complaints of Power Loss, Shuddering, and Stalling. Preliminary Investigations will Begin on 400,000 Ford F-150 Trucks.
The experienced defective product law firm of Wright & Schulte LLC reports that the NHTSA has begun its preliminary investigations into acceleration issues reported by owners of 2011 to 2013 Ford F-150 pickup trucks with the 3.5-liter V6 EcoBoost turbocharged engines.
The NHTSA said they started the preliminary investigation after fielding 95 complaints from F-150 owners who said that their vehicles would stutter or stall during hard acceleration. Many of the complaints said the issue occurred in damp or humid weather conditions, and many owners said in the complaints that they were concerned about their safety when driving the vehicles.
Earlier this month, three Ohio drivers filed a lawsuit against Ford over the EcoBoost engine, saying that Ford was aware of the EcoBoost issues, yet failed to notify owners of those issues, even though the auto maker has issued at least three bulletins to dealers about how to fix “intermittent stumble and/or misfire” which is “more noticeable during humid or damp conditions” and “intermittent engine surge during moderate to light loads.” One of the plaintiffs claims that his F-150 loses power during acceleration, while the other two plaintiffs, claim that that their 2010 Ford Taurus SHO has repeatedly lost power and stalled. A similar lawsuit has also been filed in U.S. District Court in Louisiana against Ford over the issues with the EcoBoost engine.
Complaints filed with NHTSA by owners repeatedly state that the F-150 shudders and loses power, and shakes violently yet when the vehicles are taken to the dealership, the mechanics are unable to identify the problem. While a NHTSA investigation can lead to a recall, the NHTSA preliminary investigation is the first step of the probe. If the safety agency feels the issue warrants further investigation, they will perform an engineering analysis, after which a recall could be initiated. However, investigations and analyses generally halt if the automaker initiates a recall.

However, according to USA Today, the engine has become standard in the Taurus SHO. It remains an option for the Ford Explorer Sport, Lincoln MKT, Lincoln MKS, and the Ford Flex.
Ford is aware of the NHTSA probe and said they will cooperate with the NHTSA investigation. No accidents or injuries have been reported because of the power loss.
